International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

At the heart of Canfor’s forestry operations is our Forest Management System, a detailed and systematic means of identifying, addressing and managing environmental impacts and sustainable forest management commitments. Our Forest Management System is independently certified to the latest version of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Environmental Management Standard 14001

Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI)

Canfor Southern Pine is certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative sustainable forest management standard. SFI is a fully-independent program for sustainable forest management that certifies forest operations across North America. As Canfor Southern Pine does not manage forestland directly, our SFI certification pertains to procurement activities. For more on SFI and Canfor Southern Pine, visit their SFI page.

Forest Stewardship Council®(FSC®)

FSC is an international certification and labeling system dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world's forests. Canfor’s Elko, Canal Flats and Radium sawmills are certified under FSC-C110827 and Chain-of-Custody RA-COC-005906 which ensures our tracking of forest fibre through the supply chain. Our East Kootenay FMU is certified under FSC-CO14462 and SW-FM/COC-001348.

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)

Both the CSA and SFI sustainable forest management standards are endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). The world’s largest forest certification organization, PEFC recognizes national or regional certification standards that meet their rigorous requirements based on international criteria and indicators of sustainable forest management. Chain of Custody

As of 2010, Canfor has 13 sawmill facilities certified to the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) chain of custody standard. In addition, Canfor Pulp’s three pulp mills also have PEFC chain of custody certification. Our Daaquam facility in Quebec maintains chain of custody certification to the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) system RA-COC-005102. PEFC and FSC chain of custody certification gives our customers confidence that Canfor products come from well-managed forests. By adhering to the chain of custody, Canfor commits to tracking every piece of lumber that comes from our mills from the forest of origin and through every step of the manufacturing process.

The standards development process meets the strict rules that govern the Canadian Standards Association, Canada’s national standards-setting body. Open, transparent and driven by local public advisory groups, CSA forest certification helps Canfor deliver on our commitment to sustainable forest management across our woodlands operations.
