Canfor is committed to the responsible stewardship of the forest resources entrusted to our care. In keeping with this commitment, Canfor has implemented a very deliberate and comprehensive certification strategy for its woodlands operations positioning the company as a North American leader.
Canfor was one of the first forest companies to have completed the certification its Environmental Management System (EMS) for all of its woodlands operations to the ISO 14001 standard.
Building on the ISO certification, Canfor has certified a number of its operations to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Sustainable Forest Management standard, beginning with area- based tenures and then continuing on with volume-based tenures. Canfor is very proud of this accomplishment as the standard is particularly demanding and requires public participation in developing a sustainable forest management plan for each forest management area certified.
Canfor is also the first forest company to qualify one of its mills to CSA International's Forest Products Chain of Custody Qualification and Marking Program. The CSA chain of custody charts the progress of forest products from their point of origin, the certified forest, through all stages in the manufacturing process, to the point at which they are delivered to the customer. This allows Canfor's Grande Prairie sawmill, a dimension lumber operation, to apply the CSA SFM Mark on its products.
Canfor's certification strategy is ongoing. As a member of the Forest Products Association of Canada, Canfor is committed to having all of its woodlands operations certified to an SFM standard by the end of 2006.
