Sustainable forest management has emerged as an approach to managing forests to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. There are several definitions of sustainable forest management, the one that Canfor has chosen to use is:
Sustainable forest management (SFM) is the balanced, concurrent sustainability of forestry-related ecological, social and economic values for a defined area over a defined time frame.
Sustainable Forest Management plans are developed for each operating area and are submitted for certification to SFM standards by independent third-party auditors. These plans must maintain and enhance the long-term health of forest ecosystems, while providing ecological, economic, social, and cultural opportunities for the benefit of present and future generations.
