We have had lots of questions about which trees are the, tallest, biggest, oldest...etc here are some statistics!
Oldest
Some species of trees have a very long life span - others are short e.g 40 years. The Mexican Cypress and the Bristlecone Pine have been found to live for almost 4,000 years! A few California sequoia's were found to be around 3,500 years old. Oldest in BC? A yellow cedar in the Caren range (Sunshine Coast area) was found to be 1,693 years old.
Tallest
Sequoia's found in California have been measured at over 112 metres (about 300 feet). In BC we have Douglas fir at over 82 metres (240 ft) they are usually about 600 years old and 6 feet in diameter. At Canfor's Working Forest in the Nimpkish Valley we had a 385 year old Douglas fir that was 305 feet tall! The record seems to be a Sitka Spruce in the Carmanah Valley that is 95 metres (312 ft) in height.
Biggest
A Sequoia in California was measured at 272 feet tall, 101 foot circumference (you could make 80 five bedroom houses from this one tree - it weighs 5,442 metric tons and is about 3,500 years old). Biggest BC Tree? A red cedar in Pacific Rim National Park was measured with a circumference of almost 19 metres. and a height of almost 60 metres.
Wildest
A Banyon Tree in India is said to fit 2,000 people under it! A Mexican Cypress was found with a 150 foot circumference!
