Why Mackenzie, BC
A rustic retreat in the Rocky Mountain Trench, Mackenzie is Beautiful BC at it’s finest, and the gateway to endless outdoor adventure.
Tucked in the Rocky Mountain Trench in Northern BC, Mackenzie is a compact community where world-class outdoor recreation opportunities abound. Named after the famed frontiersman and overland explorer Alexander Mackenzie, this northern BC community carries on that spirit of adventure and wilderness exploration.
Fact!
There are 32 km of groomed cross-country trails within the town limits and excellent night skiing is available after dusk, along 2.5 km of well-lit trails. A haven for snowmobilers, Mackenzie is a winter wonderland where optimal conditions and unparalleled powder enable sledding enthusiasts of all levels to ride along many groomed trails or make their own tracks in the endless untouched terrain. Mackenzie’s “Porch to Powder” program allows snowmobilers the unique opportunity to ride right on the roads and travel unimpeded from their accommodations to the awaiting alpine adventure. In Mackenzie the wintertime fun doesn’t end with sledding though. Locals have access to skiing, snowboarding, and ice fishing in and around the area.
While winter in Mackenzie offers big skies and open-air outdoor adventure, summers are just as much fun. The community is known as the “Gateway to Williston Lake”, BC’s largest lake, which is over 250 km long and 150-plus km wide. Williston Lake is a massive man-made reservoir (the 7th largest in the world) excellent for fishing and boating when the weather is warm in the spring and summer months.
Also only minutes from downtown, Morfee Lake’s crystal clear water and sandy swimming beaches invite Mackenzie residents to float, boat, fish, swim and soak up the summertime sun. The surrounding area features excellent options for hiking, hunting, camping, wildlife watching and all kinds of family-friendly fun including a 9-hole golf course at the Mackenzie Golf and Country Club.
