The strength behind glulam.

Canfor Southern Pine operates in the US South with 11 advanced, optimized sawmills and two glue-laminated (glulam) plants specializing in high-strength engineered wood products, including laminated beams, columns, and other glulam solutions.

As North America’s largest producer of Southern Yellow Pine glulam beams, our El Dorado and Washington facilities deliver a combined annual production capacity of more than 55 million board feet. This scale underscores our position as an industry leader and reflects our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and meeting the growing demand for durable, engineered wood products.

Glulam.

Although glulam is considered a small specialty business unit within Canfor, our two glulam plants play a strategic role. They act as internal customers of Canfor Southern Pine sawmills, delivering consistent financial returns while simultaneously benefitting our sawmills struggling with lower commodity lumber prices.

Our glulam operations are fully vertically integrated, sourcing 100% of their fibre internally from our sawmills across the Southeast United States. This integration creates added value for sawmills supplying lamstock, the raw material essential for glulam production.

Industrial machinery applies thin, yellow streams of adhesive onto a wooden board.
Glue is applied to a piece of SYP lamstock as it passes toward the press at El Dorado Laminating Plant in Arkansas.

Lamstock.

Lamstock is premium lumber made from high-grade softwood, designed to meet certain standards for quality and performance. Each piece is carefully dried to a specific moisture content and surfaced on all sides to achieve a smooth finish, perfect for transforming into durable glulam products.

The process begins the moment the lumber arrives. Every board is immediately graded and inspected for defects, then sorted by strength. Next, the pieces are finger jointed and assembled into beams, following the rigorous guidelines of ANSI A190.1, the product standard for structural glued laminated timber.

To ensure lasting strength, Hexion melamine glue is applied before the beams are cured to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, locking in the ideal moisture content. Finally, each beam is trimmed, stamped, and packaged for shipment.
