Shuswap Band and Canfor sign new relationship agreement.

The Shuswap Band and Canfor have signed a relationship agreement that formalizes their commitment to ongoing collaboration and strengthens a longstanding relationship built on respect and communication.

The new agreement establishes a framework for ongoing engagement, forest stewardship, economic participation and community collaboration.

“This agreement represents an important step in advancing our relationship with the Shuswap Band,” said Mathew Parras, Vice President, Canadian Operations, Canfor. “We’re excited about the mutually beneficial opportunities ahead and proud to work alongside a partner that is equally committed to creating lasting benefits for both our organizations and the communities we serve.”

“Shuswap Band has long recognized that forests are fundamental to the livelihood of Indigenous Peoples and are critically important for subsistence, economic, and ceremonial practices,” said Kukpi7 Barb Cote.

“The Relationship Agreement we are signing with Canfor recognizes and honours Shuswap Band’s long history with forests, sustainable forestry and economic development. It expresses our commitment with Canfor to advance and cultivate a mutually beneficial relationship. It provides greater clarity for working together in Shuswap Band’s Caretaker Area.”

The agreement establishes support and a structured framework for engagement, creating regular opportunities to collaborate on community initiatives, forest stewardship, and economic development opportunities. Through annual leadership meetings, a joint working group, and an annual work plan, the agreement provides a clear process for identifying priorities, monitoring progress, and working together to address opportunities and challenges.

As part of the signing ceremony, Canfor has made a contribution towards the construction of the Shuswap Band’s new cultural and family wellness centre, supporting a project that will provide an important community resource for local families.

“Supporting Shuswap Band’s cultural and family wellness centre was a natural extension of this agreement,” said Parras. “This initiative helps build strong, healthy communities, and we’re proud to contribute to a project that will benefit the Shuswap community for years to come.”
